DESIGN
Design – die Sein – brings a philosophical mind up to a whimsical game of comprehension which is initially grounded rather in reflection and the joy of contingency than objective proficiency of explanation or rigorous definitions. In philosophy there is a well-known German concept – Dasein that might be translated as “Being-here”. There is also Mitsein – “Being-with” or “Being-together”. Though Diesein [dı`zaın] remains unknown. Therefore there is no other choice than to regard this fairly solemn notion through the eyes of a serious investigator.
‘Die’ in German is a feminine article and indicates a feminine nature. Die Kunst [art], die Philosophie [philosophy], die Wissenschaft [science] – they all belong to the
feminine gender. If we consider this question properly it comes to notice that this sequence may be continued by numbers of various words from the realm of culture and mind.
German ‘Die’ is not only a feminine article, it is also a plural article therefore it indicates multitude. The compounded substance includes a plural self-being, being of the self. Hence Die-sein would be interpreted as plurality of being, diversity and polyphony.
Let’s not hesitate to be headlong and look at the objectifying definition of ‘diesign’ regarding the pragmatical basis of English. The notion of ‘design’ in English just like in many other languages is derived from latin designare – to describe, characterize, delineate. These words display design as a form-building action which permits to comprehend the praxis of design but do not reveal its being [sein].
In Latvian we say ‘dizains’ (design) and the word unveils the diversity of the comprehension play. Its sound builds a bridge over the gap between praxis and being reminding about German Sein and still maintaining the objectifying form-building craft of describing as it appears in English. Therefore it would be likely to say – the Latvian design brings to view the form-building of diversity of being.
